It was recently announced on RI Monthly’s website that Providence’s newest attraction may be a cat café. Cat cafés are most popular in Asian countries, and have been popping up in big cities across America such as San Diego and New York. But what are they?
Cat cafés are a place where animal lovers and caffeine enthusiasts can combine their loves into one experience. After ordering a drink of their choice (a latte, perhaps?), the customer would then walk into a separate room full of feline companions to enjoy their drink. By keeping the rooms separate, the cafés are kept clean and up to health code standards. No fuzz-ball macchiatos, is what we’re saying.
The cat room will be full of around ten to twenty locally adopted felines who crave human companionship. You will be able to play with the cats, and give away free chin scratches as you relax and enjoy your drink. The kitties essentially replace the newspapers and library-like atmosphere of a traditional café, with purring and snuggles.
“The Purrfect Cup Cat Café” indiegogo.com page has raised over a thousand dollars in just a week in support of Zach Durkin and Sarah Brown’s tomcat excursion. The couple first learned about cat cafes while they spent a year teaching English in South Korea, and decided they wanted to open a cat café of their own in Providence.
All of this sounds too good to be true, but it is true. You can go online on indiegogo or RI Monthly and check it out yourself. But what about dogs? I think if we are going to have a cat café, a puppy palace should be next door. It would have dogs of all shapes and sizes, and serve cook out foods like hot dogs and hamburgers. Sure, you could probably make these at home, but you’d come here for the bustling atmosphere of being whacked with husky tails and barked at by beagles-to really get the whole dog owning experience. Who doesn’t love slurpy dog kisses?
And who wants to relax anymore? Calmly sipping a latte while being snuggled by a dozen furry balls of love sounds horrendous. Wrestling in the mud and eating a pure carnivorous diet is the true dog-loving, American way. Don’t let any cat loving, coffee drinking weirdo tell you any different.
I don’t have any set puppy palace plan yet, but when I do, I’ll put it up on indiegogo for sure. Until then, just remember not to support Zach Durkin and Sarah Brown’s “The Purrfect Cup Cat Café” small business project on indiegogo.com , or read about their vision on rimonthly.com. Do remember, though, that cats and coffee are totally overrated, and that neck curl thing cats do when you scratch the top of their head, or when they nuzzle up under your arm while you’re trying to write a newspaper article isn’t adorable at all. Dammit.
